Upcoming 2015 Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration provides scholarship opportunity

Two essay contests will be held in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. in conjunction with the January 19 celebration. The scholarship essay contest is open to Independence high school seniors with an additional essay contest available to Independence 8th graders.

300 LINC students participate in Girls on the Run 5K

Over 300 girls from 18 LINC Caring Communities Sites participated in the Girls on the Run 5k race on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Arrowhead Stadium. The youth were cheered on by parents and LINC staff during the race.

National organizations are partnering to prevent child fatality due to vehicular heatstroke

The Administration for Children and Families, the U.S. Department of Education, the Office of Child Care, and Head Start are working to decrease the rate of child fatality due to vehicular heatstroke. In 2014, at least 17 children died of heatstroke. Download the poster and flyer here.

National Alliance of Black School Educators visits A.C.C.P.A. in Kansas City Public Schools

Kansas City is hosting members of the National Alliance of Black School Educators for tour visits of its schools. Members were welcomed at A.C.C.P.A. Wednesday, November 19 with student dances, choir, band, and drum line performances.

Newest graduates of Developing Your Family Child Care Business equipped to expand child care support

Developing Your Family Child Care Business graduated its newest class Monday, November 17 at MCC-Penn Valley. This 12 session program is sponsored in a partnership between the Francis Institute for Child & Youth Development and LINC. Graduates emerge from the program with skills to develop and sustain their own quality child care business.

Gov. Nixon announces 1,500 more summer jobs for youths

Gov. Jay Nixon announced an initiative to connect 1,500 Kansas City area young people from low-income families in the Kansas City region with summer jobs in 2015. The summer jobs program will use $4.5 million of existing federal block grants to support wages of $8-an-hour, for up to thirty hours a week, for 1,500 Kansas City youth from low-income families during the summer of 2015.
