Students to compete in county division spelling bees next month

The 2014 Jackson County Spelling Bee is under way, with division bees to be held in February. Seventy-five students have advanced from their school bees and will compete in divsion bees at the Kansas City Public Library and Mid-Continent Public Library. Division winners will participate int he Jackson County Championship Bee, Feb. 22. The Jackson County champion will represent Jackson County in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May in Washington, D.C.

The Jackson County Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Mid-Continent Public Library, Kansas City Public Library, Kansas City Federation of Teachers, and LINC.

Many LINC Caring Communities elementary school sites are participating in the Jackson County Spelling Bee including Belvidere, Butcher-Greene, Conn-West, Meadowmere, and Martin City (Grandview School District); Dobbs (Hickman Mills School District); and Attucks, King and Rogers (Kansas City Public Schools).

LINC site coordinators worked with students in INC Before & After School programs to prepare for the school spelling bee, LINC supports participation in the spelling bee to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage.
