Emergency Rental and Utilities Assistance Program

Federal funds are available to assist renters in households with some past-due rent and utility bills during the pandemic. The processing of the funds is backlogged, so once you have applied for aid it is still important to contact your utility company and/or your landlord and inform them that your application is in process.

Below are some specific efforts for households to seek aid with utility bills.

The Mid-America Assistance Coalition

MAAC is taking applications from low-income households who may be able to receive help with utility bills through the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The organization has access to some $6 million to help families in Jackson, Clay and Platte counties. NOTE: The program does not provide aid to undocumented residents. The deadline for applying was extended to May 31. To apply, go here.

Spire

Customers of Spire in low income households impacted by the coronavirus pandemic can apply for assistance here. Other help from Spire is available here.

Evergy

Customers of Evergy can request help and adjusted payment plans by applying here. Evergy has suspended late fees through the end of the year and reduced other fees.

Leak Stoppers

Bridging the Gap and the Kansas City Water Department are partnering to help income-eligible residential customers in Kansas City to receive free water conservation kits and other help in reducing water bills. Learn more and apply at bridgingthegap.org/water/leakstoppers.
