Organizations gather to address youth homelessness

The first conference in the Heartland dedicated to the serious and growing issue of youth homelessness was held in Kansas City on September 12. The circumstances that result in a youth becoming homeless are unique and varied, but trends are identifiable and best practices exist. The agenda provided information about data trends, tools, and strategies that are proven to work to end homelessness among youth.

Community organizes Day of the Child event

Independence will honor children and the community's rich heritage with an International Day of the Child celebration on Saturday, May 6, 11 am to 4 pm, at Hill Park, 2201 S. Maywood. The community celebration is free and open to the public.

Volunteers to spruce up Independence schools for Project Shine on June 24

The Independence School District will celebrate its 10th annual Project Shine volunteer event on Saturday, June 24, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year, volunteers from Independence businesses, churches and civic organizations will clean, paint and beautify five ISD schools: Benton Elementary, Santa Fe Trail Elementary, Spring Branch Elementary, Sycamore Hills Elementary and Nowlin Middle School.

LINC temporarily closes food pantry to reorganize

The Local Investment Commission (LINC) has a food pantry at Northern Boulevard United Methodist Church in Independence, MO. known as Project Suppertime.

LINC and the church have mutually agreed to temporarily close the food pantry to reorganize inventory and train new volunteers.

Those wishing to support Project Suppertime can make contributions directly to either the Local Investment Commission, 3100 Broadway, Suite 1100, Kansas City, MO. or to Northern Boulevard United Methodist Church, 1800 S Northern Blvd, Independence, MO 64052.
