LINC site council helps spur action for critical sidewalk construction
The Pitcher Elementary community has long wanted sidewalks in its neighborhood for the safety of children who walk to school.
When LINC’s revived Pitcher community site council met this year, the glaring lack of sidewalks was one of the first concerns school patrons and neighbors raised.
LINC has been emphasizing the work of its site councils at more than 40 Caring Communities sites at schools and in community centers to rally resources and ideas to get things done.
At Pitcher, Jackson County Legislator Manny Abarca attended a recent meeting, along with Principal Luis Hinojosa, who has been asking for sidewalks for a long time, said LINC’s Caring Communities Coordinator at Pitcher, Andrew Smith.
The legislator toured the school grounds and the surrounding neighborhood and the concerns of the Pitcher community mounted and the city began new sidewalk construction in May.
The experience is inspiring to the Pitcher community and to the other Caring Communities sites that are trying to empower their neighborhoods, Smith said.
“Shout out to the site councils,” he said. “You have a chance to get out into the community and do some cool things.”
