The joy of tired legs: LINC 5K Bike Ride inspires children, families to 'keep your heart rate pumping'

The fleet of riders in LINC’s first 5K Bike Ride rolled onto Grandview’s Little Blue River Trail May 17 with some bikers who’d never tried such a distance before.

“I just pushed,” 9-year-old Gennessys said. “Pushed my way into it.”

“My legs kind of hurt,” said Araya, 10. “But it was fun . . . It’s fun to go biking with your friends.”

That’s what LINC Athletic Director Jason Ervin wanted to hear. It’s why LINC organized the new bike ride with the City of Grandview and the View community center, and why partners like BikeWalkKC and the Bike Doctor of Raytown came out to help ensure the riders and their bikes were ready and safe.

“It’s important for you guys to get out of the house, off those video games and get out and ride some bikes, play some sports and do some things outside to keep your heart rate pumping,” Ervin told the bikers.

“We’re going to have a good summer,” he said. “Be safe and let’s get ready to rock and roll on this ride.”

BikeWalkKC’s team of Kat Murry and Davis Bloom made sure helmets were right and helped keep the group safe in traffic, and the Bike Doctor, Phillip Amstutz, helped with last-minute repairs and tuning.

12-year-old Ashton, who was the first rider to finish the 5K, enjoyed the thrill — and being in a community of friends.

“It was really just fun,” Ashton said, “a fun time with all my friends.”
