Call 2-1-1 and ask for free tax help

Tax season is here, and for many taxpayers help is standing by — for free.

Anyone who earned less than $60,000 or who is 60 or older can get help from volunteer tax preparers to file a 2022 income tax return. Both the preparation help and the cost of filing is free.

To connect to the program, call 2-1-1 and ask for free tax help. Or go to myfreetaxes.com.

The help is part of the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program.

Anyone who earned less than $73,000 who wants to file their tax returns themselves can do so for free online by going to myfreetaxes.com.

Calls to 2-1-1 go to the local services connection line through the United Way, and callers who qualify for free tax preparation are connected to a volunteer tax preparing location nearest them.

The deadline for filing tax returns is April 18.
