“My Free Taxes KC” is back, ready to help the thousands of Kansas Citians who can file their taxes for free.

This time around, the fleet of volunteer tax preparers will be working from home virtually or at various drop-off sites to be safe during the pandemic, but helping people get their 2020 taxes in and their refunds back all the same.

Anyone who earned less than $57,000 in 2020 qualifies for the free tax service, and even those who earn more can receive some tax filing resources.

To get started, go to myfreetaxeskc.org and under “Need Help Filing Your Taxes?” click on the tax assistance form.

Don’t live in Kansas City, Mo., or Kan.?

The service is available to taxpayers who live in either Kansas City, Mo., or Kansas City, Kan. Other free tax services are available by contacting the United Way at 2-1-1, or by visiting the IRS website.

Volunteers with the Kansas City Metropolitan Tax Coalition will contact everyone who registers. In most cases volunteers will complete the tax filing for the taxpayers virtually and digitally. Some volunteers will be working at various sites to assist those taxpayers who need to drop off their tax documents.

Whether tax returns are to be completed online or with some in-person contact, everyone must register first at myfreetaxeskc.org.

The Kansas City Metropolitan Tax Coalition provides tax services through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
