Many Kansas City-area residents are carrying around criminal records that could be cleared.

Expungement Day is coming to help unshackle those who qualify.

The “Clear My Record” team at Code for KC is calling on people with lingering criminal records to come to the expungement event April 27 between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, 2411 E. 27th Street.

The Clear My Record team is seeking help spreading the word to those who could benefit.

Expungement Day may be able to help you if:

  • You have completed all aspects of a misdemeanor sentence at least three years ago.

  • You have completed all aspects of a felony sentence at least seven years ago.

  • Your convictions were in Missouri

  • You earn low-to-moderate income.

The process to expunge a criminal record can be costly, time-consuming and tedious, but the Clear My Record team has been working with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and Jackson County on a grant-funded program to help people past those barriers.

To register for Expungement Day, go to https://info.umkc.edu/clearmyrecord/getting-started/. The team will be able to start the process and determine eligibility.

Registering early will increase the likelihood that the team at Expungement Day will be able to process paperwork the day of the event. But people will be able to register at the event.

Information is also available on Facebook at Clear My Record Expungement Project, or by calling 1-800-200-2871.
