Prompt action saves child's life at LINC after school program

Prompt action and a well-trained staff are being credited with saving the life of a young student at Truman Elementary in the Hickman Mills School District.

Dianah Buycks said her seven-year-old daughter Sa'Vaia fell to the ground last week after her pacemaker stopped working.

The two school staff members and  LINC site coordinator Wesley Cunningham rushed to the child's aid. The story is receiving extensive media coverage: Fox 4;  Channel 9

“I instantly ran down to the gym to assess the situation and that’s when we realized this was something serious,” said Wesley Cunningham, the school’s LINC site coordinator.

The staff used an on-site defibrillator until emergency medical personnel arrived and transported the child to Children's Mercy Hospital where she is expected to recover.

The child is a regular participant in the LINC Caring Communities after school program.
