Get in the game: LINC K-12 chess tournament returns in-person March 5

It’s time to enroll. LINC’s K-12 chess tournament is returning in-person March 5 at William Chrisman High School with divisions for children of all ages.

And it feels good, says LINC Chess program director Ken Lingelbach.

The virtual tournaments that carried the program through the pandemic were exciting and intriguing, but face-to-face contests — with masks — are a welcome return.

“Kids enjoy time with other kids,” Lingelbach said. “They’re looking forward to it. We’re ready to have a good time.”

Contestants must register online by noon March 2 to be able to compete in the first round. Register at kclinc.org/chess.

On March 5, players need to check in by 9 a.m. at William Chrisman High School, 1223 N. Noland Road in Independence. Masks are required.

The divisions are K-2, K-5, K-8 and K-12. The tournament is open to skill levels from beginners to masters. Players need to know how the pieces move and how to make a checkmate.
