Watch: Free legal aid available for many Center, Marlborough families and others

Free legal services can help many families with eviction defense, consumer protection, small business needs and more.

LINC hosted a virtual seminar recently, introducing Legal Aid of Western Missouri’s Adopt-a-Neighborhood Project to families in the Center Elementary and Marlborough neighborhoods in south Kansas City.

“We’re here to talk through any questions you might have, any issues you might have, to try to find a solution together,” said Kayla Hogan, director of the Adopt-a-Neighborhood Project.

The project teams Legal Aid with law firms in the Kansas City area that “adopt” neighborhoods by providing lawyers and other supports to help individuals and community groups.

The Marlborough Neighborhood is supported by the Stinson law firm. Marlborough is one of seven neighborhoods that are part of the program with other partner law firms. Adopt-a-Neighborhood focuses on helping with economic barriers such as housing issues, eviction concerns, consumer protection, hazardous properties, title issues and small businesses and non-profits support.

But Legal Aid has many other services and the Adopt-a-Neighborhood program encourages anyone to call who thinks they could qualify for aid because the team can also make referrals to other services.

“We’ll do our best to find a team that is able to assist,” Hogan said.

LINC’s Caring Communities Site Coordinator at Center Elementary School, Richard Williams, urged neighbors to seek out the help offered to its community.

“We want to help you with your legal problems,” he said.
