Watch: Renters rights and responsibilities; tips from Legal Aid, Hickman Mills' Justice in Schools

Legal Aid of Western Missouri attorneys offer important tips about eviction moratoriums, rent payment plans, safety inspection programs and tenant rights in this LINC video.

Attorneys Rachel North, of Legal Aid’s Justice in the Halls Project, and Garrett Christensen, of the Justice in the Schools program in Hickman Mills share ideas like these:

  • Remember that if you qualify for the CDC moratorium against pandemic-impacted evictions, it does not cancel past due rent.

  • If your landlord agrees to a payment plan to recover past-due rent, get the agreement in writing, and get receipts.

  • Learn about protections for renters in Kansas City’s Healthy Homes Rental Inspection Program and the Tenants Bill of Rights.

  • Know that Kansas City also provides protection from renters who have to vacate a lease because of threats of domestic violence.
