More than 2.3 million homeowners were 90 days or more past due on their mortgages in September. This is a 500% increase since the beginning of 2020. Homeowners who fall behind on their payments now may face foreclosure in the near future.

Through CARES Act funding awarded to Jackson County and channeled through United Way of Greater Kansas City, Legal Aid of Western Missouri is making staff available to provide foreclosure prevention services to eligible Jackson County residents. Potential legal services include:

  • Applying for CARES Act forbearances for eligible loans and ensuring that loans currently in forbearance are allowed up to 12 months of forbearance if needed

  • Applying for loan modifications

  • Filing Chapter 13 bankruptcies to prevent foreclosure
