Sophia Hoffman named 2015 Jackson-Clay County Spelling Bee champion

Sophia Hoffman, sixth-grader from Highland Park Elementary, will represent Jackson and Clay County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The inaugural season of the Jackson-Clay County Spelling Bee came to a close Saturday, February 28, when Sophia Hoffman, sixth-grader at Highland Park Elementary in Lee's Summit, was named champion.

Hoffman will represent Jackson and Clay County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 24-29 in Washington, D.C. Last year, Sophia competed with Kush Sharma, then seventh-grader at Frontier School of Innovation in Kansas City, in 95 rounds spanning two weeks before Sharma was declared winner.

LINC sponsors the Jackson-Clay County Spelling Bee in conjunction with the Kansas City Public Library and the Mid-Continent Public Library to help students improve their vocabulary and develop correct English usage. Site coordinators in the Before and After School Program worked with students to prepare for their respective division bees earlier this year.
