300 LINC students participate in Girls on the Run 5K

Over 300 girls from 18 LINC Caring Communities Sites participated in the Girls on the Run 5k race on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Arrowhead Stadium. The youth were cheered on by parents and LINC staff during the race.

Independence Heritage Festival celebrate diverse community

Independence residents were celebrated with Independence Heritage Festival, Saturday, October 11. Designed to highlight the diverse cultural heritage of the Independence community, food, music, and dances from around the world were shared and enjoyed during the free event.

Independence Night Out Against Crime brings together community, law enforcement

Independence Night Out Against Crime, held at McCoy Park this year, brought 500 area residents together with law enforcement from Independence and Sugar Creek for an evening of free food, family fun, and preventing crime through education and awareness.

Independence community takes a night out against crime

Independence Night Out Against Crime community celebration will be held Tuesday, October 7 at McCoy Park. The Independence community has been participating in crime prevention activities throughout September with fun family events at schools and neighborhood community projects. Crime prevention activities are planned through the month of October.

Upcoming festival celebrates diverse heritage

Independence Heritage Festival 2014 will be held Saturday, October 11 at Hill Park. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. residents can enjoy the diverse culture that is the background of Independence residents.

LINC works with community members to provide senior housing to residents

LINC staff worked with several partners and community members to reopen the vacated Mt.Washington and Seven Oaks schools to provide quality senior housing. The facilities now offer local Independence and Kansas City residents with modern one and two bedroom apartment options.

Registration is open for the next Independence Homebuyer Education Class Saturday, September 13. The two part classes will be held at the Community Services League on Noland Road.

Jackson County Spelling Bee expands to include Clay County students

The recent expansion of the Jackson County Spelling Bee to Clay County opens the spelling bee to students in the eight school districts in Clay County. Participation in the Jackson-Clay Spelling Bee gives students the opportunity to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Wayne City Landing Days celebrates historic riverboat landing in Sugar Creek

The City of Sugar Creek celebrates the historic river boat landing with three days of family fun, a carnival, food, and historic games. Wayne City Landing was held for the first time this year.

Upcoming health fair to provide health screenings to students

Students needing immunizations and health screenings for the 2014-2015 school year are welcome to attend the Back to School Health & Wellness Fair, Saturday, August 9. The fair is sponsored by the Jackson County Health Department.

Wayne City Landing Days commemorates Sugar Creek riverboat landing

The City of Sugar Creek invites the community to take a step back in time August 7-9 with Wayne City Landing Days in Sugar Creek, Mo. This free family festival commemorates the first steamboat landing west of the Mississippi River with live entertainment, food and craft vendors, historical re-enactments, contest, carnival rides, and more.

Independence schools announced for Project Shine July 12

Five schools in the Independence School District will receive the benefit of volunteers during Project Shine this summer. Volunteers participate in cleaning, painting, and light yard work to prepare schools upcoming academic year.

Youth volunteer with LINC during food distribution to over 300 area families

Youth and LINC site staff in Independence worked to provide over 300 families with 15,000 pounds of food during Thursday, June 19 during a volunteer opportunity with Christ United Methodist Church.

Summer programs start

Extensive summer school programs started June 4 in several LINC-supported school districts. In the Kansas City Public Schools, LINC was one of several partners opening a summer school program with a strong focus on instruction in core academic areas. Over 7,000 students are enrolled in KCPS summer programs.
