Two Kansas City public charter schools to close

Kansas City’s public school lineup is reducing by two charter schools at the end of this school year.

Kansas City Public Schools will close its sole charter school, Kansas City Neighborhood Academy, an elementary school that opened in 2016.

Another elementary school, Pathway Academy, also announced that it will be closing.

President's budget recommends eliminating federal after school funding

The just submitted federal budget recommends eliminating federal funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers - a significant funding source LINC uses to fund after school programs.

LINC currently uses 21st Century Community Learning Center funding to support after school programs in the Kansas City, Hickman Mills and Grandview school districts.

Over 2,300 students attend after-school programs in 23 different elementary and middle schools in the three districts.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) initiative is the only federal funding source dedicated exclusively to supporting local after school, before-school and summer learning programs.

KCPS Celebrating Successful Launch of Breakfast In the Classroom

Kansas City Public Schools and Operation Food Search are ready to celebrate their joint efforts to help children get the most important meal of the day so that they can focus on the important work of learning. KCPS received $477,742 in grant funding for 25 schools serving 12,500 students to introduce Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) breakfast service.

Ed Zigler: Founder of Head Start and Kansas City native dies

Ed Zigler, the founder of Head Start and a champion of early childhood education, died recently.

Zigler grew up in Kansas City and was a product of the Kansas City Public School District, attending Woodland Elementary and Manual Tech.

His early Kansas City childhood experiences included involvement with a “settlement house” where his family learned English and received health services and other needs. Based on that experience, Zigler considered himself “an original Head Starter.”

Head Start has served over 35 million children and their families. Here’s the 1965 announcement by President Lyndon Johnson about the creation of Head Start.

The Kansas City community recognized Zigler in 2003 when he returned to Kansas City and visited Woodland Elementary. On that occasion, several community leaders shared the profound influence Zigler had on the work on early education in the Kansas City area.

Rosemary Lowe, LINC Commissioner, honored at MLK Jr. celebration

LINC Commissioner Rosemary Lowe was presented with the Rev. Dr. Nelson “Fuzzy” Thompson Legacy Award during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Kansas City Chapter 2019 MLK Day Community Mass Celebration at Palestine Baptist Church on Jan. 21.

Lowe received the award in recognition of her leadership in a life of service to the community. Also recognized was the late Rev. Dr. Charles Briscoe, whose loved ones were presented the award on his behalf.

Fort Osage opens new early childhood center

LINC’s partners in the Fort Osage School District began the new year with much more capacity for early education with the ribbon cutting of Woodland Early Childhood Center on January 2.

LINC Chess Girls Tournament on February 9

Students from around the Kansas City area will participate in the tournament. The LINC Chess Girls Tournament originated to encourage female participation in chess. LINC Chess held the first Girls Tournament in 2013.

Kansas City Black History 2019

LINC along with its partners the Kansas City Public Library and the Black Archives of Mid-America is again pleased to produce and share its annual Black History educational poster set and booklets. During the civil rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s, African Americans in Kansas City fought with others across the country for full political, social, and economic rights. Empowered by political groups such as Freedom, Inc., local black activists championed legislation for public accommodations and fair housing and demanded equal education and employment.

Hickman Mills Superintendent recognized by Missouri Afterschool Network

Dr. Yolanda Cargile was recognized as an outstanding administrator for her support of after school programming. Dr. Cargile was presented the award at the Dec. 13 school board meeting.
