Workshop to help families get internet, low-cost TV streaming

Need help finding low-cost access to TV entertainment and information? Or help getting affordable Internet?

The Kansas City Public Library, KC Digital Drive and Google Fiber are holding a free workshop to help households learn about inexpensive ways to get Internet and online streaming services.

Attendees will also get free Google Chromecast to get access to more streaming options.

The workshop will be at the Kansas City Public Library’s North East Branch at 6000 Wilson Ave, Kansas City, Mo., from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 4th. Food and drink will be provided.

Attendees will learn how to reduce cable TV bills — or eliminate the need for cable altogether.

Many households may qualify for the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and will be able to make an application to receive a monthly $30 discount on Internet service.

Attendees who want to apply for ACP need to bring the following:

One form of Identification:

  • Valid government, military, state or Tribal ID

  • Birth Certificate

  • U.S. Driver’s license

  • Passport

  • Certificate of U.S. Citizenship or Naturalization

  • Permanent Resident Card or Green Card

  • Government assistance program document

  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) document (does not need to include date of birth)

One of the following proof of qualification:

  • Total income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (3 consecutive months’ paystubs)

  • Proof that at least one member of the household receives assistance from, attends, receives or participates in one of the following:

    • SNAP, Medicaid, Federal Public Housing Assistance, SSI, WIC, or Lifeline

    • Tribal-specific programs

    • Free and reduced-price school meal program

    • Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school

    • Federal Pell Grant

    • A broadband provider’s existing low-income program
