'Know your rights' seminar aims to empower tenants on housing issues

Kansas City Public Schools is hosting a “Know Your Rights” seminar for the public to empower tenants on housing issues.

When: Tuesday March 31, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Where: The Family & Community Engagement Resource Center at Central High School, 3221 Indiana Ave. in Kansas City, Mo. 

The seminar is being led by the KCPS Justice In the Schools clinic. It will cover a wide range of key points in Missouri state laws and city ordinances that cover landlords and tenants. The primary goal of the seminar is to help renters become better informed about their rights. 

All members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend this “Know Your Rights” seminar. There will be food, door prizes, and activities for children. 

The Justice In the Schools clinic is located at Central High School and is by KCPS in partnership with Legal Aid of Western Missouri and SchoolSmartKC. It was launched to defend families of KCPS students against wrongful evictions in order to prevent homelessness and keep students in their current school. The clinic provides free legal services for KCPS families. These services include: 

  • Landlord/Tenant Law (Eviction Defense) 

  • Public & Subsidized Housing Issues 

  • Foreclosure Prevention 

  • Family Law and Guardianships 

  • Domestic Violence Prevention 

  • Healthcare Food Stamps, TANF, & SSI 

  • Consumer Matters (car titles, loans, & bankruptcy) 

Justice In the Schools staff members are not allowed to help landlords, provide legal assistance for criminal matters, or provide legal assistance for worker's compensation claims.
