Independence celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. with keynote speaker Frank White

The community is again invited to the 29th annual City of Independence Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Monday, January 18. at 7 p.m. 

Keynote speaker Frank White, Jr. will address attendees at Truman Memorial Building in Independence. White, the newly appointed Jackson County Exeuctive, Royals Hall of Fame member, and Gold Glove winner, will speak during "It Began With A Dream" celebration along with performances by Erna Boggess, featured MLK artist Dean McMillian, and Paseo Academy Chamber Choir. 

The winner of the John Olivarez Scholarship essay contest will be announced during the celebration. The recipient will receive 300 dollar scholarship for their essay on this year's featured topic, "It Began With A Dream" in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. The scholarship is available to any Independence high school senior planning on attending an accredited four-year university, community college, or vocational school. 

Eight grade students in the Independence School District participated in an essay contest commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr., the winner of the essay contest will receive a 50 dollar family pass for Adventure Oasis Water Park.
