Science Fun - With a hands on approach, participants will learn how to use the scientific process, including content language to engage their students in science experiments that encourage prediction, observation, analysis and executive brain function. Eight stations will be set up with materials and process instructions and small group question cards and small groups will go from one to another in a round robin fashion doing the experiments and answering instruction-related questions. The large group will come together at the end for a large group discussion.
Art As A Process - Participants will learn from hands on projects and group discussion the value of the process of creating art in early childhood. Participants will create a self portrait and/or a family portrait and discuss the social-emotional value in this as a large group and learn the age appropriate details in such projects for different ages and stages. Participants will discuss the fine motor value of art at different ages as we as a large group use scissors/pencils/clay. Participants will learn and discuss in small groups the value of exposure to multiple materials by creating a collage as a small group and discussing texture/size etc. and how such characteristics impact the creative process. Participants will gain several ideas for age appropriate process based art projects to take back to the classroom from a list begun by the instructor and completed in a large group brainstorm session.
